This movie was shot in the Wolong Giant Panda Breeding Centre, Sichuen, China. The approach to shooting was a mixture of drama and wildlife documentary, and the production itself a sometimes chaotic combination of Chinese and Hong Kong crews. I was on location for most of the shoot, but departed early, narrowly avoiding the huge earthquake that devastated Chengdu.
The sequences of the panda in peril were shot on a hastily assembled bluescreen stage after I had left, and 3DCGI’s main task was to somehow make them work. The team was augmented by Agustin Cavalieri (compositing) and John Shearlock (who created the tiny bird leading the panda from the frozen lake)
