Cubicomp software had no object animation mode – you could keyframe the ‘view’, but that was it.
The hierarchical character animation needed here was achieved with a combination of nested command macros (me) and custom spline interpolation code (brainiac and mentor Rex Mcintosh). One of the things that made the sequence so striking at the time was the high frame rate at which it was animated (50 fps).
Motion was captured (by hand) from custom reference footage of N.Z celeb ‘Mika” who was videotaped in TVNZ’s Avalon Studio 9 (where I had previously worked as a cameraman and graphic designer).
